Buyer's Guide
They share the same clasp, the same lock, and at a glance even the same silhouette. But the Haut a Courroies and the Birkin are fundamentally different objects. Different histories, different proportions, different collectors. Here is everything you need to know before choosing between them.
The Haut a Courroies was created by Hermes in the early twentieth century for equestrians. Its purpose was practical: tall enough to carry riding boots, wide enough for equipment, and secured with exterior leather straps that held contents in place on horseback. It was a working bag built for people who rode for a living.
The Birkin arrived in 1984, born from a chance conversation on an Air France flight between actress Jane Birkin and Hermes CEO Jean-Louis Dumas. Birkin had emptied her straw bag into the seat pocket and complained there was no well-made leather bag that worked as a handbag. Dumas sketched one on an Air France sick bag. The Birkin went into production the following year and became the most recognised luxury handbag in the world.
Both bags share Hermes DNA: the same hardware, the same lock-and-key system, the same hand-stitching tradition. But their proportions, posture, and purpose are distinct.
The HAC carries two prominent leather straps on the exterior of the bag, crossing the front and secured to the base. On modern pieces these straps are purely aesthetic, a heritage detail rather than a functional fastening, but they remain the single clearest marker that separates a HAC from a Birkin at a glance. No exterior straps: Birkin. Straps across the front: HAC.
The Birkin is wider relative to its height, with a rounded silhouette that softens when carried. The HAC is taller relative to its width, more architectural, more upright, with a boxy structure that holds its shape whether full or empty.
